Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Overview

Nestled amidst the landscapes of Sikkim, India lies the magnificent Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Rising tall at an elevation of 8586 meters this majestic Himalayan giant extends across Nepal, Tibet and India divided into three sections; Main, Central and South.
Encompassing an area of around 7,000 meters Kanchenjunga showcases a unique and expansive terrain. Embarking on the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a 11 day adventure that takes you away, from the hustle and bustle of life to experience the serenity of the worlds third highest peak.
Starting from Yuksom this journey winds through magnolia forests, rhododendron blooms and dense fern thickets before reaching the peaceful Sachen campsite. The trek then ascends to Phedang where captivating scenic trails await along with opportunities to immerse yourself in natures embrace. Continuing further leads you to Dzongri where breathtaking panoramic views of mountains like Pandim, Thenchinkhang and Jhuponu unfold before your eyes during a two day stay.
The trail unfolds treasures such, as the Paha Khola Bridge adorned with high altitude waterfalls and inviting pools formed by the Prek Chu River.

Day 1 - Drive from Bagdogra Airport/NJP to Yuksom (5,670ft) (7 Hours)

Start your trek by immersing yourself in the beauty of the Himalayas as you drive from Bagdogra Airport/NJP to Yuksom. Along the way you'll be treated to awe inspiring views of the mountains while following the path of the Teesta River. As you ascend you'll cross a bridge, in Legship before reaching Yuksom. Once you arrive in this town check in at a hotel. Take some well deserved rest for the day.

Day 1 - Trek from Yuksom to Sachen (7,150ft)

Today marks the beginning of a trek! As the morning sun rises we will embark on our journey by ascending and following the Rathong River. We will trek through forests filled with magnolia trees, vibrant rhododendrons and lush ferns. Our path will lead us to the Paha Khola Bridge, where we can enjoy a lunch and recharge for the rest of our adventure. Keep your eyes peeled for orchids, colorful flowers and playful monkeys along the way! When we reach Sachen it's time to set up camp and unwind after a fulfilling day.

Day 3 - Trek from Sachen to Tshokha (9,700ft) (via Bhakim/8,600ft)

Embark, on a captivating 4 6 hour journey, through the viburnum plantations. As you continue you'll cross the Prek Chu River. Hike uphill for approximately 2 3 hours until you reach Bakhim. From there your ascent will lead you to Tshoka, a Tibetan refugee settlement where you'll spend the night in a campsite.

Day 4 - Trek from Tshokha to Phedang (12,000ft)

During todays hike you will traverse uphill. Pass through rhododendron forests. The trails are well maintained ensuring a journey. Continuing from there a brief trek will lead you to Phedang, where you will spend the night in campsites

Day 5 - Trek from Phedang to Dzongri (12,980ft)

After having breakfast, at the Phedang campsite you will embark on an trek that will take you through stunning landscapes in the Himalayas. This particular trek will lead you to an altitude of over 4,000m! Once you reach this milestone take a break. Enjoy your packed lunch while admiring the breathtaking views around you. Take this opportunity to acclimate yourself to the altitudes. After a deserved rest continue your climb, towards the Dzongri campsite area. From here prepare to be mesmerized by the awe inspiring sights of Koktang, Rathong, Kabru, Khangchendzonga, Simvo and Pandim peaks.

Day 6 - Dzongri

Enjoy your leisure day by either unwinding at the campsite or embarking on an adventure to explore the surroundings. It's essential to acclimate yourself to the altitudes before ascending. You'll spend the night in camps.

Day 7 - Trek from Dzongri to Thangshing (12,900ft)

Embark, on a 5 6 hour trek to witness the captivating beauty of nature. As you begin your journey you'll gradually. Cover 1 mile, leading you to a charming low ridge at an elevation of 13,500 feet. Here you'll be greeted by the sight of chortens and vibrant prayer flags fluttering in the breeze adding a touch of spirituality to the views. Throughout your trek be prepared to be spellbound by the vistas of Kanchenjunga and Pandim peaks.
After this awe inspiring experience your path will take a turn towards Pandim. Along the way you'll pass through enchanting rhododendron forests. Encounter the Prek Chu River. Pause for a lunch break at a trekking lodge nearby before continuing your adventure for another 1.5 hours, towards Thangshing—your overnight destination.

Day 8 - Trek from Thansing – Goecha La (16,000ft) – Lamuney

Begin your day early to avoid the weather conditions that could impede your progress later in the day. As you climb uphill through the terrain you will eventually descend towards Samiti Lake. Cross the Zemathang Plateau. Next you'll start ascending over a stretch of rocky terrain and after trekking for approximately an hour you'll reach the Goecha La Pass.

Day 9 - Trek from Lamuney to Tshoka

Embark, on a 7 8 hour trek to the Kanchenjunga Peak and the picturesque Dzongri Plateau. Rise in the morning to witness the breathtaking views of Kanchenjunga from a ridge then commence your journey back towards Tshoka. To make the climb more manageable we will take a route through the Dzongri Plateau passing by Prek Chu and the beautiful deciduous forests of Phedang. Once you reach Tshoka settle into cozy overnight stay camps, for a deserved rest.

Day 10 - Trek from Tshokha to Yuksom

After a trek of 5 6 hours you will reach the end point of your journey, at Yuksom. During this part of the trek you will descend along the Prek Chu River. Once you arrive in Yuksom make your way to a hotel where you can check in and enjoy some leisure time, for the remainder of the day.

Day 11 - Departure from Yuksom

The tour concludes at this point. Once you have finished your breakfast, at the hotel pack your belongings. Complete the check out process. This marks the end of the Goecha La trek.
